BRIEF HISTORY

Tatbiki Güzel Sanatlar Yüksek Okulu (Applied Fine Arts) was founded on the principles of Bauhaus School which was established in Germany in 1919, by means of initiatives of Professional Technical Education Counselorship. Interior Design Education was primarily initiated under Tezyinat (Decoration) department in Sanayi-i Nefise Mektebi during the years 1929 and 1932. Later on, through Turkish-German consensus, an education model, providing techinal knowledge and skills along with education of Fine Arts was aimed to educate creative and inquisitive individuals. For this purpose, T.G.S.Y.O. was founded in 1957 with the initiatives by Prof. Adolf Gustav Schneck who was a faculty member in Stuttgart Academy.

Prof. Adolf Gustav Schneck, one of the founders of the School, was an architect, furniture designer and academician. Prof. Sabri Oran, also an architect and academician from İstanbul Technical University, was the first Director of the School. As a consequence, Interior Design Department, one of the five departments, became one of the primary educational fields of T.G.S.Y.O. The school continued education under the name of T.G.S.Y.O between 1957 and 1982 and joined to Marmara University in 1983 in accordance with the Law of Higher Education Organization. Interior Design Department, together with the other four departments, have played an important role in faculty’s participation in University, with research studies and theses of academists, progress in educational planning process between 1957 and 1983.

Interior Design Education was sustained by Turkish and foreign academists and designers in the early years. One of the main principles  in education was the training of research assistants who were chosen from the graduates. Today, the staff consists of academists who are graduates of  this school. These people also studied abroad for research and education. Foreign academists who were in the school from the beginning had given way to Turkish academists and resigned.

Interior Design Department has initiated post graduate education (master and doctorate programmes); facilitated many research studies and theses in the interior design field and has offered opportunities for post-graduate education to many interior design graduates from other faculties since 1985 up today.

  AIM OF THE DEPARTMENT

The Interior Architecture Environmental Design Program is a systematically prepared program of interrelated courses. The program provides students with a fundamental core of design principles and professional technical knowledge and skills that are designed to lead the individual to a creative thinking process, to develop creative, technical and communicative skills. Functional conceptualization is the priority in project design and design work; it is carried out by utilizing a search for form and utilizing conceptions of functionality/form/material/construction, evaluation of the physical space, and human factors, in addition to the organization of social, psychological, economic, artistic and technical concepts.

  EDUCATION

Interior Architecture Department, nourished through correlated design, art, social and scientific fields, builds its curriculum under foure major axis which are aesthetic, theory, application and technology.

Through the four year program, innovative and authentic solutions are aimed to respond the expaectations and needs of new and prospective life styles. The program consists of courses that aim to support students technically, theoretically and aesthetically. 

The main context of courses are as follows: new tendencies, past- future and current cultural issues, content and design correlations, authentic design , theoretical and applied research, industry related projects, seminars, art and design related projects, design history, design culture, current design debates and likewise. The studio curriculum consists of private and public interior and furniture projects. The design areas include residential, hospitality, health, recreation, retail, cultural and commercial projects.

Students, based on their abilities and aspirations, may direct their orientation to either furniture or interior environmental design. Since 1985, the department has started a Graduate Program including Masters and Proficiency in Art.
